A Legacy of Innovation:
Founded in 1890

Isseks Bros. was founded in 1890 by the five Isseks brothers, making it the first water tank company in the world. The company has played a critical role in shaping New York City’s skyline, contributing to the city’s iconic architecture. With the introduction of elevators in the late 1800s, buildings grew taller, and Isseks Bros. stepped in to deliver water to these higher floors, forever changing the landscape of urban living.

Elevating the Skyline: Early Success and Tragedy

In the early years, Isseks Bros. revolutionized water delivery in buildings taller than six stories by designing tanks to meet both domestic and fire protection needs. Tragically, in 1896, the youngest brother, Abraham, lost his life in a job-site accident. His wife, Dora Isseks, stepped in, becoming one of the earliest women to lead a business, pioneering what is now known as a Woman Business Enterprise (WBE). Dora led the company into the 20th century, laying a solid foundation for future generations.

Expansion and Resilience: 1920s to the Great Depression

During the 1920s, Isseks Bros. expanded along the East Coast, installing water tanks from Florida to Maine. Our tanks became a common sight in the apartment buildings and office towers rising in Manhattan. The company weathered the Great Depression, staying strong while continuing to provide essential infrastructure. Our expertise became vital during World War II, when they were called upon for military projects across the globe.

Modern Leadership and Iconic Projects

From the 1960s onward, the Hochhauser family, descendants of the Isseks, took over leadership, with the fourth generation of Hochhausers, along with COO Adam Levy, now guiding the company. Over the last five decades, Isseks Bros. has left its mark on some of New York’s most iconic structures, including the Chrysler Building, One Vanderbilt, Citi Field, and Hudson Yards. Our work not only extends beyond New York but also beyond water completely, including projects with distilleries like Maker’s Mark and tequila producers in Mexico.

From Tanks to Art: A Creative Partnership

In the 2000s, Isseks Bros. embraced a creative collaboration with the “Word Above the Street” project, installing canvases on water tanks throughout New York City. These unique art installations raised awareness about water conservation, blending utility with art in a public space. The project was backed by the mayor’s office and demonstrated the company’s ongoing commitment to innovation.

Looking Ahead: The Next Chapter

With over 134 years of uninterrupted operation, Isseks Bros. continues to build on its rich legacy. Under the leadership of David and Scott Hochhauser, along with the next generation in Adam Levy, the company is set to reach its 150th anniversary in 2040. Committed to craftsmanship, innovation, and strong New York roots, Isseks Bros. looks forward to continuing its pioneering work for many more years to come.
